May 2007.  Herndon Middle Orchestra wins awards at the Music Festival in Williamsburg:

  • Symphonic orchestra receives is ranked third in their division (after two other FCPS orchestras) playing grade IV pieces.
  • Concert orchestra is ranked third in their division playing grade III pieces.

HMS faced tough competition from schools with very strong orchestras.

March 2007.  Herndon Middle Orchestra performs in the District XII Festival:
  • Symphonic orchestra receives an Excellent (2) performing grade IV pieces:
  1. St. Anthony Chorale (Haydn/Dackow)
  2. Entranceof the Queen of Sheba (Handel/Velke)
  3. The Speckled Hen Overture (Hofeldt)

  1. La Rejouissance (Handel/Meyer)
  2. March of the Meistersingers (Wagner/Dackow)

District Festival
August 2006.  Ms. Bette Gawinski takes the baton as the new director of the Herndon Middle Orchestra.

 
June 2006.  Ms. Sweitzer recognizes exemplary students:
  • Zoha K., Amalia C., Tyler S., and Kate S. receive Outstanding Musician Awards.

  • 30 students are recognized as "Rehearsal Champions."

  • 10 students are recognized as "Most Improved."

  • 20 Students are recognized for the achievement in the Solo & Ensemble Festival.

Ms. Sweitzer also gives special recognition to the concertmistresses (Sarah F. and Shebani D.) and section leaders.

  • Symphonic orchestra receives an Excellent (2) and is ranked third in their division (after two other FCPS orchestras) playing grade IV pieces.
  1. Allegro Spiritoso (Senaille/Higgins)
  2. Allegro from Concerto Grosso (Handel/Dackow)
  • Concert orchestra receives an Good (3) and is ranked fourth in their division playing grade III pieces:
  1. Overture to the Royal Fireworks (Handel/Meyer)
  2. Fantasia for Strings (Del Borgo)

  1. Polka from Schwanda the Bagpiper (Weinberger/Isaac)
  2. Rhosymedre (Williams/Foster)
  3. Hungarian Dance No. 6 (Brahms/Isaac)
  • Concert orchestra receives an Excellent (2) and is ranked fifth in their division:
  1. Can-Can from Orpheus in the Underworld (Offenbach/Isaac)
  2. Saturday at the Symphony (O'Reilly)
