Welcome to the beginning of a promising year at Herndon Middle School! I look forward to working with the talented young students of the HMS Orchestras program to grow musically and to become one of the best programs in FCPS.

The performing arts are an integral part of the curriculum in the Fairfax County Public Schools. The Orchestra program at Herndon Middle is structured to provide the student with an opportunity to discover his/her talent in music and to develop this talent and interest to whatever level of achievement he/she desires. The Orchestra provides a liberal education by expanding the student’s learning experiences and by developing many mental and physical skills which can be applied to other areas - all while we have FUN! Self-discipline in instrumental music is the key to many learning experiences that will enrich the life of every individual. I hope that each student will take advantage of this opportunity to participate in a discipline which may lead to many years of pleasure.

The purpose of this handbook is to introduce the Orchestra students and their parents to the Orchestra program at Herndon Middle School and to establish guidelines for a successful program. This handbook will inform the students as to what is expected of them as members of the Orchestra program and of the many opportunities which the instrumental program at Herndon Middle offers to each of them to share and improve their musical skills.

As the 08-09 season begins, I can hardly believe that this is already my 3rd year at Herndon MS! I reflect on past accomplishments and look forward to even more success for the orchestras. This year we are incorporating some fresh ideas to enhance playing technique and collaboration within the Herndon Pyramid orchestra program.

VOLUNTEERING IS KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL YEAR! I am convinced that strong parental involvement is the secret to maintaining a successful and quality orchestra program. I invite and encourage ALL parents of our orchestra students to lend your valuable time by volunteering your unique talents and organizational skills. HMS Orchestras program needs YOU! Your support and contribution of time is significant and absolutely makes a difference to the students! Please let us know how you can help!! Be a part of the team!
