Learning Outcomes for
Symphonic String Orchestra
Experience and performance capacity determine the outcome level.
General overview of outcomes anticipated:
By course end students will be able to:
- Perform orchestral literature with increased skill.
- Demonstrate greater knowledge of harmony, rhythm, form,
instrumentation and tone color.
- Demonstrate an awareness of historical periods of music and the
stylistic practices which distinguish each period.
- Understand and use musical terms beyond the basic level.
- Appear as soloists and/or function as section leaders.
Instrumental skill outcomes anticipated:
- Playing with good intonation, balance, attack and release.
- Playing with an understanding and sensitivity to style and
interpretation.
- Being able to hear ones part in relation to the total sound of the
ensemble.
- Ability to adjust instrument pitch quickly.
- Appreciation of added ability to equalize the dynamics within a
section through bowing technique.
- Possessing a controlled sound.
- Demonstrating a fluent right and left hand technique.
- Being able to read various rhythms correctly at sight.
Major Outcomes Anticipated:
Cognitive:
- The student will be able to perform the assigned part
satisfactorily.
- Each student will become familiar with the music literature studied
and will be able to identify the composition by:
a. composer and title
b. style and period
c. characteristic form
Affective:
- The student will develop an appreciation for varied music
literature.
- The student will respect his/her peers and will recognize that music
is a cooperative venture in an ensemble.
- The student will develop a sense of beauty and expand his/her
capacity for aesthetic enjoyment.
Evaluation and Marking:
All grades are based on how well the student performs in attaining the
desired outcomes of the course relative to his/her basic ability and
capacity for musical growth.
The following outcomes are also expected for each student:
- Dependable and consistent individual contribution.
- Promptness and regularity in attending rehearsals.
- Consistency in preparation of lessons
- Improvement in instrumental performance.
