District XII Orchestra Auditions

2002-2003
Student Information

  • Please be sure you are available to participate fully in the event in January before signing up to audition. Frequent conflicts include private school entrance exams and SAT testing. Be aware of the January date when scheduling family events, etc.
  • Prepare your audition materials carefully, observing the tempos and bowing styles indicated.
  • Parking is very limited at Longfellow.  Please consider carpooling. While there is some additional parking available along Westmoreland Street, please be advised that the neighboring church parking lots are off limits. Your patience is appreciated. Use the front entrance and proceed to the cafeteria.
  • Sign in at the registration table by the cafeteria when you arrive at Longfellow.  Registration will begin at 4:00 pm and close promptly at 6:00 pm. You will be given a registration ID number which you will use for the rest of the evening.  Remember your ID number but do not, under any circumstances, reveal your number to anyone else.  Once you have been issued your ID number, you may proceed to the warm up area.
  • Leave your cases, coats, backpacks, etc. in the warm-up area.  Stay in the warm up area until your registration ID number is called by the runner. Listen carefully for your group designation, as in ... “Junior Violin Number 37...” At that time go with the runner to the designated audition room and wait quietly outside the door for your turn. Do not practice or converse in the hallways at any time.
  • Do not talk while in the audition room. If you have a question or a problem, step outside the room and ask your runner about it. The runner will then communicate your concern to the judges behind the screen.
  • The judges will tell you when to begin.. wait for their instructions. Even though the audition scales and excerpts will be taped to the music stand, you may still use your own music if you wish. Also, your scales and excerpts do not have to be memorized.
  • Violin auditions will take place in two different rooms to expedite the process.  If you are a violinist, please do not leave before playing in both rooms. All other instruments will audition in one room only.
  • After completing your audition, do not discuss your performance with anyone still waiting to audition. Return to the warm up area, gather your belongings and leave the school building. Audition results will not be posted. Please do not call Longfellow to ask for audition results. You will be notified of the unofficial results by your teacher the following day.
  • Longfellow MS is located near the intersection of Westmoreland Street and Idylwood Rd. (called Kirby Rd on the other side of the intersection) not far from Route 7. Please refer to the accompanying map for directions.
  • Refreshments will be sold in the cafeteria.
